Police begins biometric registration of vehicles, tricycles to check insecurity

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced the biometric registration of all vehicles nationwide, even as Nigerians grumble over payment for parallel registration with other agencies.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, who briefed journalists Monday in Abuja, “the Biometric Central Motor Registration (BCMR) comes against the backdrop of contemporary security challenges bordering on terrorism, high incidence of car theft, carjacking, kidnappings and other acts of crime and criminality in our society.”

Mba said the registration method for vehicles, tricycles and auto-bikes has to change from the old analogue CMR to the new BCMR because the former lacks credibility, aids corruption, forgery and other such inconsistencies. Besides, biometrics is being used to track whatever information is required on any registered property per time.
He added that BCMR operates with smartcards and portable hand-held receivers, and is a specially developed technology that attaches automobile owner’s unique traits and personal data to their vehicles for proper identification and protection purposes.
